Theme of Spring 2019 Installment | “Recipe"

Elaboration

Do you follow the recipe or follow your gut and instincts-- said another way, do you live by the rules or create your own rules? Whether a chef’s creative expression or instructions for a home cook, a recipe can be the vehicle for understanding ourselves and our culture, the clue for unlocking the mysteries of our roots.  They tell the broader story of a time and place -- war, recession, peace, prosperity, technological advances and pop culture are all reflected in our recipes. Whether from mass migration or the union of two individuals, recipes are constantly evolving, melding cultures, available ingredients and techniques. And don’t forget, those ghosts who live in the marginalia of our cookbooks. They are the marks we leave to future generations, saying this is the unique way I created this dish.   In a real sense, cookbooks are history books written by the everyman. But “Recipe” is a broader theme than that -- How are original recipes created? And what’s with people who take a recipe to the grave? Not to mention, when and why did recipes and cookbooks become entertainment over function?

La Cocina’s F&B: Voices From the Kitchen -- “Recipe” . . . a recipe for success, recipe for failure, recipe for a good life.

About Our Speakers

F&B prioritizes and seeks the voices less often heard.  Our event celebrates those voices, creating a platform to amplify their stories. We appreciate your help in identifying those voices, be they your’s, those of the story that you will tell, or an unlikely storyteller whom you might encourage to take the stage.

What You Should Send Us

Here is a link to a form to pitch us your most creative story idea, asking for a  couple of paragraphs describing your story and other helpful information.  Remember all stories should somehow touch on food and somehow relate to our theme (“Recipe” for June 6, 2019), but if you’ve ever been to an installment of F&B, you know that some of the stories will be tightly connected to food and our theme and others will be only loosely tethered.  So, if you have a great idea for a story, talk to us about it and we’ll see if it can fit. Please know we value your idea and your effort behind your entry writeup; however, stories are not guaranteed to be included in the show and will be selected as we see most fitting to our theme and mission. If you have any questions, please reach out to Bonnie Ross, Executive Producer of F&B, at fandbonnie@lacocinasf.org.

If you would like more info about participating in F&B and what we’re looking for, please look at our Story Pitching Info & Guidelines  Here.

Looking forward to hearing from you!  And if you’re not a storyteller, but you know someone who is, please pass this on.

happy storytelling,

The F&B Team
